George Robert Newhart, more commonly known as Bob Newhart, is an American comedian and actor. He was born September 5, 1929 in Oak Park, Illinois, a small town on the western side of Chicago. He is known for his deadpan comedy as well as his slight stammer.
Biography[]
Newhart was one of three children to George David Newhart and Julia Pauline Newhart. He earned a bachelor's degree in business management from Loyola University Chicago in 1952.
He was then drafted into the United States Army and served during the Korean War.
After working for Fred A. Niles, an independent film and television producer, Newhart and a co-worker began recording comedy routines and sending the audition tapes to radio stations. In 1959, he signed a deal with Warner Bros. Records and he began doing stand-up comedy in nightclubs.
The following year, he released his first comedy album The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart which was the first comedy album to ever reach #1 on the Billboard charts.
His popularity landed him a variety show on television in 1961 entitled The Bob Newhart Show that only ran for one season. Throughout the '60s, Newhart continued to release comedy albums and make guest appearances on different TV shows.
It was in 1972 when Newhart was approached about a new sitcom TV series, The Bob Newhart Show. He would play the lead character, Bob Hartley, a psychologist living in Chicago. The successful series lasted for 6 seasons.
In 1982, he starred in a brand new sitcom entitled Newhart, in which he played the part of an innkeeper in Vermont. Then in the 1990s, he had two short-lived sitcoms; he played a cartoonist in Bob and then starred alongside Judd Hirsch in George and Leo.
Personal life[]
Newhart married Virginia Quinn (nicknamed "Ginnie") in 1963. She is the daughter of actor Bill Quinn.
